Yesterday 17 June, the British government announced the opening of negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA) between the United Kingdom and Australia and New Zealand. A free trade agreement between the UK and Australia will be ambitious and comprehensive. It will be modern. More Trade with the 65 preferential partners covered in the report increased by 3.4% in 2019, while the EU`s total external trade increased by 2.5%. The EU`s trade agreements with Canada and Japan have particularly boosted trade by almost 25% and 6% respectively since their entry into force. Through the implementation of these chapters, the EU intends to maximise the leverage effect of increasing trade and investment in order to make progress on key issues such as the promotion of decent work and environmental protection or the fight against climate change. While the report finds that there are challenges in the implementation of these chapters, the Vietnam Agreement is cited as a successful example of how the EU`s engagement with its partners before its entry into force can lead to tangible progress on these issues, notably with regard to working obligations.
